Introducing...
Hello, and welcome to Allotment Madness, home to our allotment diaries. I've been tending to our plot in semi rural Herefordshire and 2025 will be our 3rd growing year. An idea and concept that started off as a small 2m by 4m growing bed in the back garden during lockdown has since flourished to working a 90 square meter plot on our local municipal allotment site. In the last couple of weeks, we've also added a further 45 square meters to our plot as we've taken on a half plot immediately adjacent to our original site.
The acquisition of this additional growing space means that there's going to be plenty to do this winter, during a time where normally, there wouldn't be a huge amount to do other than the occasional harvest of winter veg.
Over the coming posts, I hope to give a guide to our plot and share ideas and our growing progress as our plot develops.
This is our current plot as it stands, with many of the beds cleared ready for the winter. It's made up of 9 main beds, a hooped polythene bed, a large membrane covered bed on which I grow potatoes in containers and finally, a bath tub.
Below, you can see the additional plot space we've recently taken over as it was the day it became available for us to use.
The last week or so, I've spent clearing the new section and getting it covered over to help with getting rid of the weeds as we continue through autumn. Below you can see both plots together.
There's so much to do and I've got lots of plans to be getting on with but before I start getting too ahead of myself, it's time to stop and take stock now the clearing work has been done. There are plenty of other jobs to still be getting on with on the original part of our allotment that need doing.
So, as far as introductions go, that's it for the first post of this new blog. But rest assured, as we speed into autumn, there'll be lots more going on to keep the diary updated with.
Best,
Tony - Plots 36 & 37a
